A Very Belated 2023 Recap

I guess I took a bit of a blogging break.  I only blogged three times last year and this will be my first post so far this year.  I just haven’t been in the mood but now suddenly I am.  We’ll see how long it lasts.

Where to even begin?  A lot has happened since I last blogged.  The girls are about to turn 16, have jobs and are on the verge of getting their driver’s licenses.  We took an amazing trip to Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, Lake Powell and Las Vegas last summer.  We celebrated our 17th anniversary and are closing in on our 18th.  We attended some great concerts, did some fun hikes and have had lots of fun date nights, game nights and girl’s/guy’s nights out.  Ok, I guess that’s not all that much but whatever.  So, I guess to start off my 2024 blogging, I will recap 2023:

I turned 54 in January.

For President's Day weekend we went to Crescent Bar and from there Paul and Kayley went skiing at Mission Ridge and we all took a day trip to Leavenworth.

On February 28th, the girls turned 15 and we took them and a few friends to the Melting Pot.

In April, Paul and I saw the band TOTO at the Snoqualmie Casino.  It was so awesome to hear "Africa" live (one of my absolute ALL-TIME favorite songs).

In June we took our annual Nelson Family Vacation to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park.  We actually flew in the Las Vegas and spent a few nights at the Excalibur and then rented a car and drove up to St. George, Utah, where we stayed for a week at WorldMark and did day trips from there.  But I am going to do a separate post about that trip so enough about that for now.

For the 4th of July it has become our new tradition to go to Paul's cousin's house.  He lives on the water near Poulsbo so we can go out in canoes or paddleboards, and we have a big bbq dinner (salmon this time) and then some people stay for fireworks but we always come home and go to our neighborhood's fireworks show.

Sometime over the summer we visited the tree that was planted at Crescent Bar in honor of Paul's dad and spread his remaining ashes around it (the rest were spread in the river in 2022).

In early September Paul and I did a lovely hike at Mount Rainier National Park

In November we went to another concert with some friends, Night Ranger!  Night Ranger was the first rock concert I ever went to back in 1985 so it was really cool to see them again all these years later, with one of the friends that I originally went with.

That's really about it, other than just a normal Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Hope to be around more in 2024!  Couldn't resist the rhyme...

Luther Burbank Park

Last summer a friend of mine introduced me to this cool park on Mercer Island.  When we went, we only played at the swimming beach and never explored the rest of the park or played on the playground.  So yesterday, we finally went back with a picnic lunch and checked out some more of the park (there's still another section we didn't get to, so maybe next time).  The playground was really cool with all sorts of nooks and cranies, and old-fashioned metal slides and ladders.  They girls loved it. View from our picnic spot A pyramid with slides on the other side Lake Washington beyond Chair swings--never seen these before I-90 bridge over Lake Washington Trail along the lake leading to the swimming beach Should have brought swimsuits.  They were SO sandy and wet coming home.

First Day of 10th Grade

Today was the first day of 10th grade for the girls.  Sophomores.  I can't believe we only have two more of these.  Not counting college, of course. Kayley Kayley again Olivia It has become my tradition to take the day before and the first day off.  Back in the elementary days, the day before the first day was "meet the teacher day", so I would always take them to that, then in middle school we would just go to lunch or get our nails done.  Last year was their first day of high school, though, so that day was orientation and that brings us up to this year.  The day before the first day is "Wildcat Day", which is mostly a freshman and new student orientation.  Olivia is in ASB so she had to go help with that, but Kayley didn't go.  Instead, her and I took some of her old clothes to this resale store called Plato's Closet to try and sell them (it's similar to a consignment shop except they just pay you then and there and then resell them, instead of o

A Day in My Life

It's time once again for the Multiples and More Question of the Week:  A Day in Your Life. What is your schedule like? Do you work outside the home or stay home with the kids?   I am very blessed to be a SAHM.  Our schedule looks something like this: The girls get up anywhere between 7:20 and 8:20, but usually around 8:00.  Lately I've been letting them watch an episode of Dora so I can get on the computer and check email, Facebook, etc.  Otherwise they just play for an hour or so and then we have breakfast. By the time we're done with breakfast (fixing, eating and cleaning up) it's usually between 9:30 and 10:00.  We get dressed, and then we go wherever we're going that day (errands, park, playdate, etc.).  If it's a stay home day, I'll usually do a DVD workout while they just play upstairs and then we'll go for a walk or play outside after. Lunch is anywhere between 12:00 and 1:00, and nap is 1:30 or 2:00 to 4:00 or 4:30. After their nap
