Easter Weekend

We had such a busy weekend and I'm really behind.  First, on Friday we had a mom's group Meetup at the Cougar Mountain Zoo.  The weather was great for once and we had a great time.  It's a very small zoo so it's perfect for babies/toddlers/preschoolers.  And I had a Groupon voucher so it was pretty cheap for the three of us.  After the zoo we went to McDonald's for lunch which was a huge mistake because Olivia didn't want to leave the play area, but it was such a nice day I really wanted to be outside.  She had a total meltdown and I had to literally drag (well, carry) her out of there kicking and screaming.  It was really embarrassing.  But then we went to a park to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and all was well.

On Saturday we went to the community egg hunt.  We got there a bit late because I thought it was going to be held somewhere else, so it had already started as the girls and I were frantically running across the baseball field to where the eggs were (while Paul was parking the car).  Kayley managed to get just one egg and Olivia zero.  But a very nice gentleman noticed their empty/near empty baskets and discreetly threw down some of his eggs for the girls to "find", so they ended up with a few more, plus someone else gave them some of theirs later as well.  All in all, it wasn't really worth going.  It's always a challenge being anywhere by 10:00 and it was over so fast.  They did have a photo op with the Easter Bunny but there was a long line so we didn't bother.

The rest of Saturday was really fun, because it was the first really goregous and warm day all year.  I think it got close to 70, which felt so great compared to the high 40s/low 50s we've been having for weeks on end.  We did yardwork and played outside all afternoon, then grilled salmon and turkey burgers for dinner and sipped margaritas.

Sunday we went to church and then to Paul's parents' for Easter dinner.  The girls colored eggs and then we had another egg hunt.  This one was much more fun and lucrative for them.

Other random stuff:  I finally finished C25K last Wednesday!  Whoo-hoo!  And Olivia is also day-time potty trained like Kayley!  Kayley actually even wakes up dry most mornings, so I think we're going to start foregoing the Pull-ups at bedtime and try underwear 24/7.  Scary.

Good and Bad

I'll start with the bad.  Turns out the Easter season is a really bad time to try and lose weight, at least for me, being a raging chocoholic and all.  I curse the Cadbury Corporation and their insanely delicious and addicting Creme Eggs and Mini Eggs.  Anyway, I started off April very well, losing 2.5 pounds by the 6th.  Then I went out with a girlfriend that evening for a $25, 90-minute facial (!) at the Aveda Institute (beauty school) and we went for drinks/apps first, of course.  Then, like usual, instead of getting right back on track (not that we ate that bad, but still worse than I otherwise would have) the next day it's taking forever (I have yet to get back on track and it's now the 18th!).  And I've gained back those 2.5 pounds plus another pound or so.

Now for the good.  So while my diet sucks lately, I'm totally kickin' butt on the C25K front.  I'd been stuck in week 6 forever, because one day I would maybe be able to do the 25-minute run at the end of week 6 but then I wouldn't run for several more days, making starting week 7 impossible, so I'd backtrack to the beginning of week 6, etc.  This went on for several weeks and then one day a few weeks ago I just decided to keep running no matter what, and I ran for 25 minutes for the first time in several weeks (and I didn't even have my iPod that day!).  So I decided I'd just done week 7 day 1.  Then I didn't run for several more days until one day last week I finally did and I ran for 28 minutes.  So that was week 8 day 1, having skipped the rest of week 7 (I've done the entire program already at the end of last year, except for the very last workout (week 9 day 3) because I was too inconsistent with diet/exercise/making it to the gym during the holiday season and was always having to backtrack to work back up to where I left off.  So I finally just restarted around week 5 at the first of the year but have been stuck in week 6/7 forever).  Then last Friday I was doing week 8 day 2, except I just decided to keep going for another 2 minutes, thus knocking out week 9 day 1!  So if I can keep that up for the next two workouts, I will finally finish the darn thing on Wednesday!  Ugh, I can't wait to finally be an official C25K graduate!  Now, if only I could have that kind of fire/drive/motivation when it comes to diet.  I do feel it coming back (I polished off the rest of the Cadbury Creme Eggs today and I'm NOT going to buy any more!  Even when they're 50 + % off next week) but I need it to last more than 5 or 6 days.  Sigh.

Show Us Your Life- Reading List

I love to read, and before the girls came along I pretty much read every night before bed and sometimes during lunch/breaks at work or on the ride home in my vanpool.  Once the girls came, though, reading pretty much went by the wayside.  What little free time I had was spent doing other things, usually computer stuff (facebook/email/games/message boards/blogs/surfing/etc.).  At the beginning of 2010, I made "read more" one of my resolutions.  I just decided to use nap and pre-bed time to read instead of playing games on the computer or whatever.  I'm not a super fast reader, however (not like those people who go on vacation for a week and read 4 or 5 books--are they literally reading all day, every day?  I just don't get it.  I might get 2 hours in at most, and not every day, on vacation and at the most I'll finish one book and maybe start another), so I set my 2010 goal at 15 books and came in at 14 1/2.  Unfortunately, the girls stopped napping in early September, at almost exactly 2 1/2 years, otherwise I probably would have exceeded my goal by 3 or 4 books.  But I've done very little reading since then because there are too many other things competing for that 1 1/2-2 hours or so between their bedtime and mine (the above-mentioned things plus scrapbooking, TV, etc.).  As a result, I've only managed to finish one book so far this year (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo--very good) although I'm almost done with my second (In Praise of Stay-at-home Moms by Dr. Laura--not necessarily a fan but it was cheap and I was curious).  I've recently managed to squeeze in some reading throughout the day, while the girls are coloring, eating or just playing, in addition to before bed, so I'm hoping to start working my way through my reading list a bit faster.  I haven't decided for sure what all I want to read this year, but some that I'm considering are:

The Road
Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
The Help
The Shack

A Sunny Day!

Seattle really only has 3 seasons:  Summer (July 5th to mid-August, with sporadic summer-y days until late October), fall and winter.  We pretty much skip spring.  But Friday was actually pretty nice.  After baking banana bread we drove to the "swing park", a park in a nearby neighborhood with swings (the three parks we normally frequent don't have swings).  It was such a nice day and felt great to be outside for once!

Weekly Weight Loss Post - Week 5

I missed last week's post, but there's nothing to report.  Just like always, whatever few pounds I lost the first half of the month have come right back on, and I'm starting a new month weighing roughly the same as the first of last month.  I'm seriously considering employing a new strategy:  wait until the middle of the month to start working on losing, so that by the first of May I'll actually be down a few.  Of course I'll just gain them back by the middle of May but at least for once I will start off a month weighing less than the month before.

Anyway, on a good note I went retro this week and went to a step aerobics class on Wednesday.  I hadn't done step since the late 90s.  It was awesome.  I sweated like crazy and it was so fun!  I hope to start going most Wednesdays but I still have to run 3 days a week, so if I incorporate a weekly step class that makes 4 total gym visits a week which may be difficult.  Especially since I don't want to run 2 days in a row so I'll most likely have to go one weekend day a week, which cuts into other things like family outings, projects and what-not.  So we'll see.  Maybe I'll just go once every 3-4 weeks or something.

So to recap, I lost somewhere around 3 pounds the first 2 weeks or so of March, gained them back the following week or so, maintained that the remaining of March and am starting out April weighing the same as the start of March.  My goals for April are:
  • Lose 5 pounds (as in, start off May 5 pounds less than right now.  Losing 5 by the 25th and gaining them back in the next 5 days, which I'm totally capable of doing, doesn't count.)
  • Stay "on the wagon" the whole month (allowing a little indulgence on Easter and maybe if I have a girls' night out or something)
  • Break the monthly lose/gain cycle
  • Complete C25K (I'm stuck in week 6 right now)
