It was one year ago today that kids in our state and probably other places went to school in person for the last time. I was sitting in a meeting when I got the notification. Most of my co-workers were already working from home, but a few of us were still coming in at least a few days per week. Me and a few co-workers were in a conference room in a meeting with other co-workers online when the message came across our phones. We knew it was coming so me and another co-worker with kids in the same school district kind of looked at each other thinking, "aaaaaaand there it is...". At that point, most of the people who were still coming into the office no longer did, except for me for a few more weeks, but as of the 23rd I was finally fully remote.
It was originally going to be for 6 weeks. Then it was going to be for the rest of the school year. Then it going to be for at least the first 6 weeks of the new school year. Then it was, "we have no clue, we'll see how it goes after the Christmas break" (my words, not theirs.). This was me:
And then, finally, a few days ago they announced that the 7th and 8th graders will finally go back to in-person instruction starting the 29th of March! But for the girls it will be the 30th, because A-L goes Mondays and Thursdays, and N-Z goes Tuesdays and Fridays.
It has gone ok, but their grades have suffered a bit and I have had a hard time focusing on work with them home all the time, especially on days with no school. I really can't imagine how people with much younger kids were able to manage.
I'm thinking about taking the first day off, so I can just enjoy the peace and quiet and get some things done. Can't wait!
